Abstract

Our Classical Legendary intellectuals have contributed in Punjabi language, art and culture and produced masterpieces in Punjab which are good examples of universal truths that promote local traditions. Heer Waris Shah, Mirza Sahiban, Sassi Punnu, Shireen Farhad, Sohni Mahiwal, Saif ul Maluk, Yousaf Zulakhan and Laila Majnu are examples of heritage of Punjab in a real sense. In the classic literature of Punjab’s classic poets like Waris Shah, Mian Muhammad ud Din of Gujrat, Hasham Shah, Qadir Yar, Syed Fazal Shah, Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, Maulvi Ghulam Rasool and Daim Iqbal Daim, all quenched their thirst for knowledge and “drank deep” at the fountain of learning. Above said philosophers present the different picturesque of their heroines like Heer, Sahiban, Sassi, Sohni, Shireen, Badi ul Jamal, Laila and Zulekha which have been discussed in this paper. The paper also throws light on the aesthetic appreciation of feminine characters in Punjabi tales by classical poets.
